With our app for Android phones, it’s possible to enjoy your TalkTalk TV Store movies and TV shows wherever you’ve got a Wi-Fi connection or mobile data connection and download them to watch offline.
Just download and install the app, sign in and you’re ready to enjoy all your favourite movies and TV shows! We’ll assume you’ve connected your phone to a UK based Wi-Fi or mobile data connection before reading this.
Just so you know, this article is all about getting setup and using the app. If something’s wrong, we’ve got another article that covers common issues.
How do I get started?
You’ll need at least version 4.1 of Android to enjoy our app. To check your version, just go to Settings > About Device > Android version. Your phone will also need to be able to play Widevine-protected content. If yours doesn’t, we’ll tell you when you launch the app. Finally, your phone should have Google Play store – so you can’t use some phones that don’t, like the Amazon Fire Phone.
All up to date? Excellent. Now just:
- Download the TalkTalk TV Store app by searching for ‘TalkTalk’ on the Google Play store. You’ll need an Android phone to do this, and you’re looking for the TalkTalk TV Store app, not our other ones.
- When you open the app for the first time, we’ll ask you to sign in using your TalkTalk TV Store account. You can create an account by visiting www.talktalktvstore.co.uk in your web browser if you haven’t already got one.
How do I find and purchase movies and TV shows?
We’ve not added a shop to this version of our app for Android phones, so you’ll need to use our website to purchase Movies and TV shows instead. To make it easy, we’ve optimised our shop to work really well on your phone and added a quick link to our website in each section of the app.
There’s information about renting and buying in this article.
Once you’ve bought your movie or TV show, go back to the app and drag down on the screen with your finger until the wheels starts to spin, then release to refresh. It’ll only take a second – and your content will then appear so you can watch it straight away.
How do I watch movies and TV?
Once you’ve logged into the app, we’ll show you all of your movies straightaway. Just tap the play button on the one you’d like to watch, and you’ll be good to go. If you’ve picked a rental, we’ll warn you about any time restrictions you need to be aware of.
If you’d like to watch TV instead, just tap the My TV shows tab and we’ll take you to your library.
Find the show you’re interested in and choose ‘View owned episodes’ to see all of the episodes you own from a particular show.
Once you’ve found the episode you’re interested in, just press the play button and we’ll start your episode straight away.
If the episode you’re interested is from a different series, just tap the series name and choose the one you’re interested in from the drop down menu.
If you’re done looking at a TV series, you can press the back arrow to return to the main My TV shows menu.
How do I control the player?
We’re using the default Android video player for our app, which you’ll be used to from watching other movies on your phone. If you can’t see the controls, just tap the screen. When you’ve finished watching, just press the back button.
How do I download movies and TV?
With the latest version of our Android app, it’s possible to download your movies and TV episodes over UK Wi-Fi or mobile data in SD and then enjoy them on the go. If you don’t see the functionality below in your app, you’ll need to update it.
If you want to watch abroad, make sure you download in the UK before you go and stay logged into the app. You'll also need to return to the UK and connect to the internet with the app open at least once every 30 days.
You can watch or download your purchased movies and TV episodes on up to five devices. If you choose to download a rented movie, you’ll only be able to watch it on the screen of your Android phone and you won’t be able to watch it anywhere else.
When you first open the app, we’ll show you all of your movies. To download one, choose the download button in the bottom right corner of the title. You’ll be told how big the file will be, and you can press download to confirm.
To download a TV episode, just switch to the My TV shows section using the menu at the top of the screen and choose ‘Browse owned episodes’ for the show you’re interested in, using the series selector at the top of the screen to identify the episode you’d like to download.
Once you’ve chosen the right series, you can choose the episode you want to download by scrolling up and down. When you’ve found the one you’d like, just press download and confirm your download.
Once you’ve started your download, it’ll appear in the download manager - accessible by pressing the button in the top right hand corner of the screen. Here, you’ll be able to check the progress of your download and you can choose to pause or cancel it.
It’s only possible to download one thing at a time, so if you’d like to download something else, you’ll need to either wait for your current download to finish, or cancel it.
Once your download is complete, it’ll be indicated by a green downloaded indicator on your content, and when you press play, we’ll automatically play your download rather than streaming.
If your phone doesn’t have an internet connection, we’ll take you to a special offline mode which shows only your downloaded content. You don’t need to be online to start playing, but will need to reconnect to a UK based internet connection whilst the app is open at least once every 30 days – this is so we can check your licenses.
Using the menu at the top of the screen, you’ll be able to switch between your download movies and TV shows.
If you’d like to make some more space on your device, you can delete a download by choosing the download button, and then pressing the ‘Remove download’ option to confirm.
On phones, all downloads are in standard definition and completed over Wi-Fi to your internal memory.
If you’d like to be able to stream or download over 3G or 4G, you can turn on the option in the settings menu, which you can access by pressing the menu button on your device or choosing the menu icon in the application.
In the settings menu you can also change the storage location for downloaded content from your internal storage to a memory card.
When downloading to a memory card, it’s important to note that:
- You can only watch movies on the device you used to download them, using the TalkTalk TV Store app
- You won’t be able to change storage location whilst a download is in progress
- Changing your storage location will only affect downloads started after the setting has changed – previous downloads will be stored in the same place as before
- It’s not possible to move downloads between storage locations, so if you want your download stored on the newly selected location, you’ll need to delete it and download again
How do I watch with my Chromecast?
Once you’ve setup your Chromecast and ensured you’re connected to the same wireless network as it is, it’s really easy to cast from our Android app. Simply:
- Open the app, press the cast button in the top right hand corner and select your Chromecast.
- Your Chromecast will show a ‘Ready to cast’ screen, so you know everything’s connected properly.
- Choose the movie or TV show you’d like to watch, and you’ll be able to use your Android phone as a remote control. You can manipulate the volume, or drag the playback bar to choose another part of the movie to watch.
Once your movie has started, you’ll be able to do whatever you’d like on your phone – the movie will keep playing in the background. Just press the home button and use your phone as normal. When you’d like to get back to controlling the movie, simply re-open the TalkTalk TV Store app or scroll down from the top menu bar to access playback controls.
If you’re having trouble, take a look at our common issues article.
How do I sign out?
If you’d like to sign out of the TalkTalk TV Store app, just open the account menu by tapping the three dots in the top right hand corner of the screen. If your phone has a hardware menu button, you won’t see the three dots, and you should tap it instead.
Once you’ve opened the menu, simply choose ‘Sign out’ and you’ll be taken back to the login screen. You can also find the TalkTalk TV Store terms and conditions in this menu.
Where's my watch later list?
We’ve not yet added Watch Later to the Android phone app, so for now, you’ll need to visit our mobile optimised website at www.talktalktvstore.co.uk in your browser to view it. There’s information about managing your watch later list on our website in this article.
What do I need to know about mobile data?
Our app for Android phones lets you both browse your library and watch or download movies and TV shows using your mobile data connection. For the best experience, we’d recommend a 4G connection where available. It’s worth noting that watching content over mobile data can be expensive and may incur additional charges from your mobile network, particularly if you’re not on a plan with unlimited internet.
If you’ve got any doubts about watching and downloading movies and TV shows over mobile data, we’d recommend contacting your mobile network. You’re responsible for any data charges incurred whilst using our application.
You're in control. Using the settings section of the app, which is accessible through the menu in the top right corner of the screen, you can turn on or off mobile data usage whenever you'd like.
Some Android phones include data monitoring applications so you can keep track of your usage – check with your device manufacturer for more information.
