You can enjoy everything in your TalkTalk TV Store account on the go using your Apple iPad and the TalkTalk TV Player app, as long as you’ve got an iPad with iOS 8 or later. Just download and install the app, sign in and you’re ready to enjoy all your favourite movies and TV shows! We’ll assume you’ve connected your iPad to Wi-Fi before reading this.
Just so you know, this article is all about getting setup and using the app. If you’re having issues, take a look at this article instead and we’ll try to fix them.
How do I get started?
You’ll need at least iOS 8 to enjoy TalkTalk TV Store on your iPad. To check your iOS version, just go to Settings > General > About > Version. If you’re below iOS 8, you might be able to update using iTunes – though some of the oldest iPad versions don’t support this version.
All up to date? Great. Now just:
- Download the TalkTalk TV Player by searching for ‘TalkTalk’ on the App Store or clicking here on your iPad. You’ll need an Apple iPad to do this, and you’re looking for the TalkTalk TV Player app.
- When you open the app for the first time, we’ll ask you to sign in using your TalkTalk TV Store account. You can create an account by visiting www.blinkbox.com in Safari if you haven’t already got one.
How do I find and purchase movies and TV shows?
Unfortunately, we’re not allowed to sell movies and TV shows from within the TalkTalk TV Player – it’s an Apple restriction. You’ll need to visit the website at www.blinkbox.com in Safari and make your purchase. There’s information about renting and buying in this article.
Once you’ve bought your movie or TV show, go back to the app and drag down on the screen with your finger, then release, to refresh. It’ll only take a second – and your content will then appear so that you can watch it straight away.
How do I watch movies and TV?
Once you’ve logged into the app, we’ll show you all of your movies straightaway. Just tap the play button on the one you’d like to watch, and you’ll be good to go.
If you’d like to watch TV instead, just tap the menu button in the top left corner of the screen and switch to My TV shows.
Press the play button to enjoy the episode you watched most recently, or choose ‘Browse owned episodes’ to pick a different episode.
Once you’ve chosen ‘Browse owned episodes’, you can choose the episode you want by using the series selection option at the top of the screen and scrolling left and right through your episodes. When you’ve picked the one you want, just press play.
How do I control the player?
Once you’re watching a movie or TV show, it’s really easy to control the player. If you can’t see the controls, just tap the screen. You can move through the content by dragging the time with your finger, play and pause by pressing the button in the bottom left and change the volume in the bottom right.
In the top right corner, you can change between having the video zoom in to fill the iPad screen, or make sure you don’t miss any of the action by viewing content in widescreen, where available. Finally, to leave the player, just press the ‘Done’ button in the top left.
How do I download movies and TV?
With the latest version of our iPad app, it’s possible to download your movies and TV episodes over UK Wi-Fi in standard quality or high definition, and then enjoy them on the go. If you don’t see the functionality below on your app, you’ll need to update it.
If you want to watch abroad, make sure you download in the UK before you go and stay logged into the app. You'll also need to return to the UK and connect to the internet with the app open at least once every 30 days.
You can watch or download your purchased movies and TV episodes on up to five devices. If you choose to download a rented movie, you’ll only be able to watch it on the screen of your iPad and won’t be able to watch it anywhere else, including via Chromecast.
When you first open the app, we’ll show you all of your movies. To download one, choose the download button in the bottom right hand corner of the title. You’ll be told how big the file will be, and you can press download to confirm.
By default, all downloads are in standard definition. If you’d rather download in 720p HD, you can do so by going to the menu in the top left, and visiting the account section. Here, you’ll be able to switch on HD – but this won’t affect your existing downloads, or downloads already in progress. HD files are bigger, use more data and take up more space on your device.
To download a TV episode, just switch to the My TV shows section using the menu in the top left corner. You’ll be able to immediately download the episode of each show you watched most recently, or find a different episode by choosing ‘Browse owned episodes’.
Once you’ve chosen ‘Browse owned episodes’, you can choose the episode you want to download using the series selector at the top of the screen. Just scroll left and right through the episodes from the series. When you’ve picked the one you want, just press download.
Once you’ve started your download, it’ll appear in the download manager in the top right hand corner of the screen. Here, you’ll be able to check the progress of your download. If you leave the app for more than ten minutes, the download will automatically pause – but you can also manually pause it here or cancel if you’d like.
If you’ve got more than one movie or TV episode in your download manager, you can use the up button to move a title to the top of the list. It’ll start downloading straight away, and your existing download will be paused.
Once your download is complete, it’ll show in the My downloads section of the app. You can switch to it using the menu in the top left corner.
To enjoy your download, just press the play button. Your content will start playing back straight away. You don’t need to be online to start playing, but will need to reconnect to a UK based internet connection whilst the app is open at least once every 30 days – this is so we can check your licenses.
If you’d like to make some more space on your device, you can delete a download by choosing the green download button, and then pressing the ‘Remove download’ option to confirm.
How do I watch with my Chromecast?
Once you’ve setup your Chromecast and ensured you’re connected to the same wireless network as it is, it’s really easy to cast your purchased movies and TV shows, and rental content which you haven’t downloaded, from our iPad app. Simply ensure you’ve got a good internet connection and:
- Open the app, press the cast button in the top right hand corner and select your Chromecast.
- Your Chromecast will show a ‘Ready to cast’ screen on the TV, so you know everything’s connected properly.
- Choose the movie or TV show you’d like to watch, and you’ll be able to use your iPad as a remote control. It’s not possible to watch rental content which you’ve already downloaded with Chromecast. You can manipulate the volume, or drag the playback bar to choose another part of the movie to watch.
Once your movie has started, you’ll be able to do whatever you’d like on your iPad – the movie will keep playing in the background. Just press the home button and use your tablet as normal. When you’d like to get back to controlling the movie, simply re-open the TalkTalk TV Player app.
Once you’ve finished using your Chromecast, you can disconnect by pressing the Cast button within the application and choosing the ‘Disconnect’ button.
