Using our app for Windows PCs and tablets is the best way to enjoy blinkbox on your PC – letting you watch anywhere in the UK with an internet connection or download your movies and TV shows to watch offline anywhere in the world. So whether you want to enjoy the Fantastic Four at the fair, Arrow in Australia or Girls in Gibraltar, you’re equipped to buy and enjoy loads of movies and TV shows on the go.
We’ll assume you’re connected to a UK based Wi-Fi network and you’ve already got a blinkbox account before reading this. We’re also assuming you’re on the latest version of our app, so if yours looks different to the one below, make sure you update.
Just so you know, this article is all about getting going and using the app. If you’re having any trouble, take a look at this article instead and we’ll get everything sorted.
How do I get started?
You’ll need at least Windows 8.1 to enjoy our app. You’ll also need a Microsoft ID to download the blinkbox app from the Windows Store.
- What if I've only got an older version of Windows?
If you’re on Windows 7, you can upgrade to the Windows 10 Insider Preview for free from Microsoft. There’s more information on the Microsoft website. To get started, just follow the steps in Windows Update. We’re not able to provide any support with the upgrade process.
If you’d like to stay on Windows 7, or you’ve got an older version, you won’t be able to use our app, or download content to watch offline, but you can enjoy movies and TV shows using streaming with your web browser as long as your computer meets our minimum requirements.
All up to date? Great. Now just:
- Download the blinkbox Movies app by searching for ‘blinkbox’ on the Windows Store. You’ll need a Microsoft ID to do this, and you’re looking for the blinkbox app. It’s free of charge.
- When you open the app for the first time, you’ll probably want to sign in using your blinkbox account. To do this, tap the account button in the top right corner of the screen.
- Next, login using your blinkbox Movies email address and password or click the link to sign up using the website.
- Once you’re signed in, we’ll add access to your existing content to the main page and give you access to account functionality.
How do I find and purchase movies and TV shows?
It’s really easy. We’ll show you some of our latest and greatest stuff right on the main page, but you can also browse or search for anything in our library.
To search, from the library page just click the search button in the top right corner.
Then just start typing what you’re looking for – you can search by title, actor or – if you’re feeling particularly clever – director. Once you’ve finished typing, just press enter to be taken straight to our search results page.
You’ll see your results straight away, categorised into movies and TV shows, to make it really easy to find what you’re looking for. To proceed to something you fancy, just click on it.
If you’d like to browse instead, we’ve got lots of ways to help you find some content to suit. From the main page, just choose latest movies, latest TV or one of our collections of new releases and bestsellers.
When you’re in the library, you can use our dropdown menu to filter by genre or change the way our content is sorted, to make it really easy to find what you’re looking for.
After you’ve found something you fancy, just tap it and you’ll be taken to a page with all the information you need straight away.
Once you’re on the page for your movie or TV show, there are loads of ways to find out more information. By pressing the more info button, you’ll see a wide range of information about the movie or TV show that you’ve picked.
On the more info page, you’ll find:
- A synopsis of the movie or TV show
- Genre, studio and cast information
- The age rating and guidance (where available)
There’s also a viewing options page, where you’ll be able to quickly review the device and license information related to your purchase before you buy. When you’re ready to purchase, just click the buy button next to the option you’d like to purchase.
Where rental options are available, you’ll see them here too.
If you’re looking at a TV show, there’s also an episodes tab. Here, you’ll see all of the episodes from the series you’ve selected. Once you’ve found the episode you’d like to buy, just press the purchase button (often, you can save money by buying a series instead).
Once you’ve pressed a purchase button, we’ll take you to a confirmation screen, where you can add a voucher code if you’d like. You’ll be able to pay using blinkbox credit or a credit or debit card, and we’ll also tell you about any Clubcard points you’ve earnt from the purchase. Once you’ve paid, you’ll be able to press the play button and start watching immediately.
How do I watch movies and TV?
When you’re logged in, from the main screen just scroll to the right and you’ll see a section called ‘My movies’ and ‘My TV shows’. Here, you’ll see your most recently purchased movies and TV shows ready to watch on the go. If you’ve got a lot of movies or TV shows, just press the ‘My movies’ or ‘My TV shows’ headers and you’ll be able to see everything.
Once you’ve picked a movie or TV show, you’ll be able to start playing it straight away. For a movie, just press the play button and we’ll start streaming your movie straight away.
For TV shows, use the episodes button and scroll down until you find the episode you’d like to watch, then press the play icon to get started.
How do I download movies and TV?
You can download your movies and TV shows using our app for Windows to watch offline in standard quality or high definition, and then enjoy them on the go.
- What are the usage rules for watching offline?
You can watch or download your purchased movies and TV episodes on up to five devices. If you choose to download a rented movie, you’ll only be able to watch it using our app for Windows and won’t be able to watch it anywhere else.
So you can keep watching your downloads, we need to refresh your licenses every now and again. Just open the app whilst connected to a UK based Wi-Fi connection at least once every 30 days.
To get started, after you’re logged in, from the main screen just scroll to the right and you’ll see a section called ‘My movies’ and ‘My TV shows’. Here, you’ll see your most recently purchased movies and TV shows ready to download and watch offline. If you’ve got a lot of movies or TV shows, just press the ‘My movies’ or ‘My TV shows’ headers and you’ll be able to see everything.
Once you’ve found something you’d like to download, just click it. For movies, you’ll then just need to click on the download button and your download will start straight away.
If you’re downloading a TV show, you can choose either to download an individual episode or an entire series, by pressing the appropriate button.
- Should I allow blinkbox to run in the background?
When you first download a movie or TV show, you’ll see a screen asking if you’d like to let blinkbox run in the background. We recommend allowing the app to run in the background because you won’t have to keep the app open to download the latest movies and TV shows. If you say no, you’ll have to keep blinkbox open and in the foreground for downloads to proceed.
If you’ve already got a lot of apps running in the background, you might need to choose an app to replace. It’s also worth noting that if your computer needs more power to effectively complete the tasks you’re working on in the foreground, Windows might pause our downloads in the background – even if you’ve previously given us permission.
- How do I give blinkbox permission if I previously didn't allow it?
By giving permission for blinkbox to run in the background, you’ll be able to download your movies and TV shows whilst you’re doing something else. If you previously turned off this off, you can activate it in settings whilst the blinkbox app is open.
Just press Windows + C on your keyboard and the charms bar will appear on the right hand side of the screen. Next, click ‘Settings’.
Within the settings menu, you’ll need to navigate to the permissions section.
Finally, you’ll need to turn on ‘Lock screen’. This is the functionality that lets the blinkbox app work in the background to download your movies. If you’ve already got a lot of apps on your lock screen, you might be prompted to choose one to replace with blinkbox.
When you’ve got some content downloading, you’ll be able to access it from My downloads. This is the place in the app where you can manage on-going downloads and also access your previously downloaded content in a single click.
To get started, just choose the My downloads button in the top right corner of the screen. If you’ve got content downloads in progress, there’ll be a green icon letting you see how much is left to download at a glance, too.
In My downloads, you can see all of your on-going downloads. Only one thing can be downloaded at a time – but if you’d like to watch a different movie or TV show first, you can use the move to top button to prioritise one item over all of the others.
You can also cancel a download if you decide you don’t need it anymore – whether it’s currently downloading or in the queue. Just click the cross button.
We’ll show you a confirmation screen to check that you’re happy for us to cancel the download before we proceed. Just press ‘Ok’.
You can also pause all of your downloads if you’d like, and carry on another time. If you choose to pause, you’ll just need to return to the same place later to continue. Don’t worry, we’ll automatically pause your download if you’re streaming a movie with blinkbox to ensure you keep having a great experience.
To switch away from the download manager, and see the movies and TV shows currently on your device, just click on this device.
To access your download content, just click on the thumbnail icon of the movie or TV show you’re interested in.
We’ll take you straight to the page for the movie or TV show, where you can read more information or get started playing the movie straight away by clicking the play button.
If you’re offline, the app looks slightly different (because we only show you content that’s on your device), but the download manager works in exactly the same way. To delete a download you don’t need anymore, just press the rubbish bin button.
We’ll always show you a warning message before deleting a movie or TV show to remind you that you’ll need to stream it or download it again from the start to watch. Just click ‘Remove’ to proceed.
By default, content will be downloaded in HD. If you’ve got limited space or a slower broadband speed, you might prefer to download in standard definition instead. SD files are smaller, so they download faster, but the video quality isn’t quite as high.
To get started, choose the account button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
Next, choose the account submenu.
This is where you’ll find all of the settings for the app and your blinkbox account. Choose the download preferences option.
In download preferences, turn off the HD option. This’ll only affect downloads to the Windows app, not any of your other devices.
How do I control the player?
Once you’re watching a movie or TV show, it’s really easy to control the player. If you can’t see the controls, just tap the screen or move your mouse. You can move through the content by dragging the white dot at the bottom of the screen and play and pause by pressing the button in the middle.
In the top left corner, you can remind yourself of what you’re watching and to leave the player, just press the back arrow button in the top left.
How do I setup parental controls?
Our Windows 8 app includes parental controls, which let you set a PIN to stop other people from watching age restricted content without your consent. These parental controls only extend to the Windows 8 app – so any settings you choose won’t be carried over to our website or other applications, for example. There’s information about our parental controls policy elsewhere on the site.
To get started, choose the account button in the top right hand corner of the screen.
This is where you’ll find all of the settings for the app and your blinkbox account. Choose the parental controls option.
Next, you’ll need to set a parental controls PIN. If you forget it, you’ll be able to change it using your blinkbox account password in the future (so make sure the person you’re protecting doesn’t know your blinkbox password either!).
The PIN should be four digits long. Once you’ve entered it twice, choose create PIN to continue. If you’ve already created a PIN, you’ll need to confirm it instead.
Finally, you’ll be able to choose which content you’d like to restrict, by age rating. You can also tick a box if you’d like to restrict content that doesn’t have an age rating.
Once parental controls are set, you’ll be prompted for your PIN whenever someone tries to watch restricted content. Just enter your PIN to authorise playback.
How do I manage my watch later list?
Watch later is a great way to tell us about movies and TV you’d like to watch in the future, so we can bookmark it for you. When you see a movie or TV show you’d like to watch later, just click Watch later and we’ll add it to your list.
You can see your watch later list on the far right hand side of the main page, and clicking any of the content on it will take you straight to the page where you can browse or buy the content.
To remove something from your watch later list, just click Remove.
Can I use Chromecast and UltraViolet?
To use a Chromecast with Windows PC, you’ll need to access our website through the Chrome browser with the Cast plugin installed, rather than using our app. There’s more information in our guide to the HTML5 player for Chrome.
You’ll be able to watch previously redeemed UltraViolet movies in our app for Windows – and purchases you make that come with UltraViolet rights will receive them (we’ll notify you on your email receipt).
More advanced UltraViolet functionality like linking your account, redeeming UltraViolet codes from boxsets and managing your settings need to be done with our website. There’s more information in our guide to UltraViolet on blinkbox.
