This is where you’ll find everything you need to know about watching movies and TV shows in HD on TalkTalk TV Store. Whether it’s a laugh out loud comedy, a web-slinging superhero or another great episode of Game of Thrones, you can enjoy them all in crystal clear high definition on selected platforms.
What is HD?
HD stands for High Definition. It’s a way to watch great content on TalkTalk TV Store in an even higher quality than before – up to five times more detail than our Standard Definition (SD) content. You’ll see exceptionally clear, crisp pictures with vivid colour. Our HD is up to 720p with stereo sound. We've no plans to add 1080p at the moment.
Why does the video quality sometimes reduce?
We use a technology called adaptive streaming, which means we're constantly assessing your connection to avoid buffering and blocky playback issues - so if your broadband connection starts to get a little choppy, we might lower the quality from HD to SD to keep things playing and ensure you can continue enjoying the movie. Once your connection becomes more stable, we'll get you back up to HD quality. It ensures you can enjoy your movie without any pesky interruptions.
How much does HD cost?
You’ll pay a little bit extra to watch our content in HD – usually £1 more for movies, and less for TV episodes. This is because HD files are bigger, to provide the detail and quality you’d expect. Bigger files take up more space on our servers and use more data when you stream them.
Where can I watch your HD content?
HD is currently available on:
- Windows PCs and Macs that meet the technical requirements
- Our app for Windows 8 tablets and computers
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- Apple iPad
- Android tablets
- Google Chromecast
- Samsung 2012+ Smart TVs
- LG 2012+ Smart TVs
- LG 2013+ Blu-ray players
We’re working on getting HD to you in even more places, but when you buy HD content, we’ll automatically give you the SD version for free, so you can still watch your movies and TV on devices where HD isn’t available.
If you’re watching on a PC, it’ll need to be running Windows 7 or Windows 8, with a 2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo processor or faster, at least 1GB of RAM, a video driver that supports High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and a computer screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher to watch in HD.
If you’re watching on a Mac, you’ll see HD as long as you’re running Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) or higher, with a 2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo processor or faster, at least 1GB of RAM and a screen resolution of 1024x768. If you don’t meet the requirements, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to watch in SD.
How fast should my broadband be for HD?
Because HD is so much more detailed than SD, you’ll need a faster internet connection, and you’ll use more data when connecting to the web. Your broadband speed should be no slower than 2.25Mbps, but for an ideal experience, you should have 5Mbps broadband or faster. You can check your current speed at http://speedtest.blinkbox.com, with the username speedtest and the password letmein. If your broadband isn’t fast enough, or there’s a lot of activity on your connection, we’ll automatically lower the quality of the video to make sure you can keep watching without interruptions.
HD on TalkTalk TV Store uses about 2GB of data per hour, so you might use as much as 5GB when you watch a two and a half hour long film. Because of this, it’s probably best to get an unlimited broadband package so you don’t need to worry.
Can I upgrade my existing SD content to HD?
Sorry, but it’s not possible to upgrade movies and TV shows you’ve already purchased to HD, but we’re always looking at ways we can make our service even better, so you might see an option like this from us in the future.
